Interview with Charlotte Provenzano, Lead Digital Underwriting Assistant

From fine tuning risk checks to leading an ever growing team, Charlotte is helping the follow flow smarter and faster.

How did you get into the insurance industry?

I got into the insurance industry through an apprenticeship that I started right after finishing sixth form.

I was really keen to get into the financial services industry so was looking at lots of different sorts of roles. I found a reinsurance apprenticeship that looked like an exciting opportunity and felt like a great fit, so I started that. And from there, I moved to Ki as a Digital Underwriting Assistant!

What’s your role at Ki – how do you spend your time, what is your specialist skill?

I am currently Lead Digital Underwriting Assistant on the Property team and am excited to soon be covering maternity leave as Property Operations Team Leader. Day to day, I am mostly doing pre-bind checks and getting risks/endorsements agreed, though I also spend lots of time training our ever- growing team of Digital Underwriting Assistants.

As Lead UA, I act as the subject matter expert for complex requests, and as team leader I’ll be managing the team of Property Underwriting Assistants.

What’s the most common challenge you come across when speaking to brokers?

We often hear that a common challenge for brokers is moving between digital communications and face-to-face interactions with other markets. This is an industry built on rich traditions and ways of working so we’re mindful of our role: augmenting the follow capacity process, whilst maintaining everything that makes Lloyd’s what it is. There are lots of features within Ki that make that flow of information between physical and digital as smooth as possible. Our business model is unique and our way of working is new, but we receive lots of positive feedback from brokers who say that they appreciate the speed and efficiency!

We also encourage brokers to contact us via the chatbot as opposed to email for the quickest response to any questions they have. This can take some getting used to as everyone is in the habit of emailing and this is where a lot of conversations with clients and other brokers are already happening.

What impact are you most proud of in your work at Ki?

It’s great to be involved in the training and development of the digital underwriting assistants. As the team is growing, it’s nice to be able to provide training to new joiners and see people growing in confidence. There’s such a supportive, positive culture in our team which is amazing to be a part of.

What are you most excited about in terms of upcoming product development?

In terms of upcoming product development, I’m most excited for the continued improvements to our pre-bind quality assurance system. The recent changes to that system along with using AI had been really useful, allowing us to complete our checks much faster and, in turn, to agree risks faster. I’m looking forward to seeing how this will be developed even further, so our service for brokers can keep getting better!
