Interview with Harry Talbot, Underwriter

Meet Harry, part of Ki’s Property Facilities team. His goal?

Long-term capacity, great service, and a platform brokers can rely on.

How did you get into insurance?

I had a lot of family and friends in insurance already, and they spoke very highly of the industry and specifically the market here in London. After finishing my A Levels, I managed to get a job at Ed Broking (now Price Forbes), in the Property division – an experience I hold fond memories of.

What’s your role at Ki – how do you spend your time? What specialist skill do you bring to the table?

I’m primarily responsible for leading the Property Facilities portfolio, which encompasses a variety of facility types, territories, and trades. Over the past two years, we’ve grown the portfolio profitability, and developed exciting new products and UW tools. Naturally this has taken up a lot of my time, day-to-day.

I also work closely with the wider Property team to help drive Ki’s growth and strong underwriting performance.

What’s the most common challenge that you come across when speaking to brokers?

I think brokers are doing a great job in selling Lloyd’s and London to their clients – not an easy task against the backdrop of strong domestic and international markets that are aggressively leaning in. Brokers want reliable, stable long-term capacity for their clients and good service, and while Lloyd’s has always been able to sell reliability, they may have fallen short in other areas in recent years.

We work hard to provide brokers and clients both stability and a great service through how we structure our portfolio and business model, as well as our attitude towards accepting risk.

What impact are you most proud about in your work at Ki to-date?

I feel proud to be part of what we’ve achieved as a team and a business over the past 2 years. We’ve managed to grow profitability against the backdrop of a very competitive market and other challenges.

In the time I’ve been here we’ve evolved from a syndicate incubated within Brit, to a standalone insurance business providing meaningful capacity through our own syndicate as well as third parties – and doing it in a way that is truly unique in our market.

What are you most excited about in terms of upcoming Ki product developments?

There are some exciting developments coming within our Property Facilities offering. We’re building products that will use our technology and data to enhance our underwriting insight and portfolio management capabilities, and unlock meaningful additional capacity for our brokers and clients. I can’t say much more right now, but it’s an amazing project and will deliver something truly unique to the market.
